The Wildlife Refuge and Hacienda is located on the southern Nicoya Peninsula of northwestern Costa Rica. The area is teaming with abundant wildlife and hosts one of the most beautiful beaches and protected bays on the Nicoya Peninsula. The area offers easy access to seeing some of the most sought after species such as White-faced monkeys, Howler monkeys, Spider Monkeys, Scarlet Macaws, White-tailed Deer, Collared Peccary, Coati, Raccoons, Coyotes, Iguanas, and hundreds of species of tropical and migratory birds.

Curú contains Costa Rica's first private National Wildlife Refuge and is an example of a successful sustainable development program. The hacienda still includes low levels of cattle grazing and produces tropical fruits such as mangos on an annual basis; however, tourism and visitation by school groups and researchers are the focus of Curú today. Curú National Wildlife Refuge and Hacienda is managed sustainably to produce a profit and local employment, while also protecting its threatened and endangered forested habitats such as mangroves, tropical moist and dry forests, and coral reefs.

Role of Volunteer

Work with our biologist, Dale Forbes BSc, MSc, in the field, to conduct field studies, in an accurate and scientific manner.

With an already established small flock of macaws and new flocks as re-introduction occurs. Our program here has been a success in that a pair of our hand reared birds released have produced two youngsters in 2004 who are now completely independent. We believe this to be a world first for the Scarlet Macaw in Costa Rica.

This project is a release site for the Amigos de las Aves project, where volunteers can help with captive breeding.

Another release site is Tiskita Jungle Lodge

Daily costs are US$15 daily for three meals and laundry.

Travel

The main center is only 10 minutes away from the main airport in Costa Rica so no transport will be provided.
