Defesco (an acronym for Development of Free Education Services Centers for Orphans) is a non-government organization based in Mwanza, Tanzania. It was founded by a group of professional teachers and others with a similar vision. Defesco's mission is to empower orphans and destitute children through academic excellence and vocational training so that they are able to face the challenges of life and grow into responsible, generous, loving, and industrious adults. We provide services to orphans, the disabled, and destitute children who are in secondary school, high school, and colleges. Currently the center supports 76 students: 43 females and 33 males. Also, right now Defesco does not have its own place for volunteers to stay. Volunteers rent an apartment close by.

Role of Volunteer

1. Teaching and coaching students in school curriculum and life skills.
2. Monitoring and assessing students' progress and performance.
3. Training and counseling parents and guardians.
4. Creating dramatized messages so as to sensitize orphanage care in the community.
5. Teaching and counseling about HIV/AIDS awareness.

Cost

Since Defesco does not have its own volunteer accommodation, volunteers rent an apartment nearby for US $200 a month. They should also budget about $150-200 for food each month.
