Combine a love for the great outdoors with an interest in conservation and sustainability. Deliver eco-tourism and outdoor education to guests and groups at our Belum Adventure Camp. This internship is perfect for an outgoing person with a passion for the rainforest who is looking to impart their knowledge to customers to benefit the environment.

Skills for your CV:

Benefits

  • Accommodation at Belum Adventure Camp included in the admin fee (if applicable). You’ll be in the staff chalet alongside another intern. However please be prepared that there will only be access to electricity in an evening for set hours

  • 8 days off per month provided as 1 day per week plus a block of 4 days off each month or 2 days off per week depending on workload
  • Additional allowance of RM250 per month after 6 months of interning
  • All work related expenses (Unfortunately this doesn’t include your travel to or from Malaysia)
  • Written reference letter upon completion of internship. We’ll do our best to help you land your dream job

What we need from you

To apply for this role you’ll need to meet a few requirements and most importantly be willing and committed to get stuck in. You can also find out a bit more about the role itself by reading about the duties you’ll be completing throughout the internship.

Requirements

  • Outgoing person comfortable interacting with people from differing backgrounds and cultures, but also comfortable working alone as when there are no guests the camp will be quiet
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a rainforest environment with a good level of fitness . Experience in outdoor activities preferential
  • Knowledge of rainforest species and high level of rainforest safety awareness
  • Confident communicator and motivator
  • Passionate about conservation and community issues and research
  • Highly organised and ability to work to a schedule
  • Team player but also comfortable working independently
  • Willing to learn new skills and flexible and adaptable to challenging situations
  • Efficient time management skills and able to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of Fuze Ecoteer projects in Malaysia
  • Fluent written and spoken English. Ability to speak Bahasa Malay is desirable but not essential
  • First Aid trained or willing to undertake a course
  • IT competency

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Lead high ropes courses and zip lining (following training from our team) and ensure maintenance of all equipment
  • Ensure safety of all participants
  • Develop rainforest research including light boxes, camera trapping and searching for signs of animal presence such as pugmarks, scratch marks, dung and calls
  • Facilitate and assist with corporate team building and educational group visits
  • Assist leading other outward bound activities such as kayaking
  • Take guests trekking alongside a guide and deliver relevant safety briefings. Enable the guests to collect data on signs of animal presence and what this information means
  • Help with collection of GPS locations on all treks and analyse data as required
  • Provide details of any snares, traps or poaching camps located to the Wildlife Crime Hotline
  • Lead presentations for guests and deliver educational games to enhance their environmental and rainforest knowledge and promote sustainable practices
  • Collect feedback and conduct reviews of all group visits in order to improve and build on our programme
  • Assist with daily chores (cleaning, cooking, washing etc) and general housekeeping at the resort
  • Report to your supervisor and collaborate with other teams where necessary, maintaining open communication at all times
  • Follow agreed timetables to deliver work in a timely fashion
  • Display a professional example to local community members, volunteers and colleagues
  • Follow instructions as delivered by project managers when on site
  • Adherence to all safety measures, risk assessments, protocols, procedures and budgets as directed by Fuze Ecoteer
  • Any other duties that may be required including; cover for colleague’s leave and illness, providing adequate notice of travel arrangements (work related or personal)
