WHAT MAKES

A GOOD

VOLUNTEER?

16
This is a two-way street, you know.
Most volunteers genuinely want to know how they can be most helpful, but a lot of projects are too wary of seeming critical or demanding to say what they really need. So we’ve decided to be the bad guy for them, and give you a list of dos and don’ts.
DO
Let them know your skills
Tell them if you’re not comfortable or not sure how to do something
Come up with new ideas
Follow the rules
Embrace the local culture
Help spread awareness back home
Try and learn the local language (or at least a few words)

DON’T
Expect the local staff to entertain you during your time off
Push your beliefs or values on the locals
Push yourself past your limits
Exaggerate your skills or abilities
Be afraid to ask for help
